Bella Swan was a high school graduate, thinking about college and the future. She had friends and her Dad was Chief Swan, the local law, around the small town of Forks, Washington.
If you bothered Bella, you bothered the law.
For all the world, Bella was an ordinary small town girl, living an ordinary small town life.
But she had secrets.
Secrets of such magnitude, that Bella could tell no one outside of those who knew. No one, not even her father. Secrets of another world that existed in the same place, but hidden.
A well kept secret!
Yes, Bella Swan was an ordinary girl, but because of the secrets she kept, her life had become anything but ordinary. In fact, her life had become supernatural.
In a very short space of time, Bella Swan had become acquainted with vampires and werewolves. She had met and fallen in love with perennial teenager and vampire, Edward Cullen and learned about his dark and secretive way of life and that of his family. The vegetarian vampire family that did not drink human blood.
She was best friends with newly turned werewolf Jacob Black whose growth spurts were almost visible. With this friendship came entry into another secret world. That of the tribe. The Quileute Indians existed peacefully, until the Cullen coven returned to Forks, causing some of the tribe to phase into werewolves. Their purpose, to protect the humans from the vampires.
The vampires and werewolves were matched in strength, skill, speed and agility. Each possessing something unique the other side did not have. Vampires were individuals, some having unique skills, like telepathy, clairvoyance, mood control, or exceptional strength or speed. But the wolves thought collectively and over many miles. Their communication was instant and their sense of hearing and smell could not be matched. The wolves also possessed long life but could revert to normality at their choosing, leaving the werewolf brotherhood behind. The vampires were the frozen undead for all eternity.
Recognizing the Cullen family as different and not a threat to the human population of Forks, the Quileute tribe made a treaty with them of peaceful coexistence, as long as no human was harmed. And this treaty was faithfully observed for many years.
By this time, Bella Swan’s world changed forever. As she moved deeper and deeper into the dark and dangerous realm of the supernatural, she found she had not only secrets to keep, but lies to tell. She would lie to her father many times in order to keep him safe and observe vampire laws and werewolf treaties.
Bella Swan reluctantly agreed to marry her vampire love, Edward Cullen. Not because she did not love him, but more from an internal conflict with marriage itself. They married, much to the anguish of Jacob who loved her too. All went well and the happy couple left for their honeymoon. This posed wedding night problems for both vampire and human but eventually things worked themselves out.
When Bella and Edward returned home some weeks later with the startling news, that Bella was pregnant and the baby was growing at an alarming rate, new challenges had to be met. Bella would have to hide away from her human friends and family. The baby was crushing Bella from the inside out and she was slowly dying.
Bella died in childbirth, the baby surviving. Edward, distraught and heartbroken was left to his misery and not killed by equally heartbroken Jacob, because Jacob saw his torture as being far worse for having to live out eternity steeped in guilt and without Bella.
Jacob, intent of murdering the baby for killing Bella, instead imprinted on her. The half vampire, half human baby Renesmee, now had the eternal love and protection of Jacob Black. This in turn earned her the protection of the splintered werewolf pack by absolute law and so ending the conflict between the werewolves of La Push and the werewolves of the Olympic forest under Jacob’s reluctant leadership.
In the meantime, Edward succeeded in turning Bella and slowly she came back to life. A different life!
All was clear, enhanced, musical almost, the moment Bella Cullen opened her eyes. Her focus was all encompassing. She saw and heard everything in every detail. Colors were more vivid, sounds more acute, smells more refined and taste…yes taste. Bella Cullen was hungry.
Ravenous in fact.
Her red eyes focused on the pulse in every living thing. In the room, outside… and further on…right up to the highway. Every living thing, whose heartbeat could now be heard over a distance, in a cacophony of rhythmic patterns, was now and would forever be, of the greatest interest to Bella Cullen. Because those sounds represented her food.
Bella Cullen understood!
This was her new life. There would be sacrifices and new rules. There would be more lies and more deceit. There would be the joy of motherhood and an ever expanding family. There would be conflict and looming war, where sides would be taken and new skills discovered.
Amid the horror of the Volturi threat to destroy the child Renesmee and the perilous days ahead, there came to Bella another realization.
She was vampire! Her body was now strong, her face a luminous beauty. Edward was now warm to the touch and there was no longer a fear in his eyes of hurting her.
They could be together, really be together!
War may be looming, but for now… Bella Cullen could only see the burning desire in Edward’s eyes. At last, she felt beautiful enough for him and his touch would no longer be delicate. As Renesmee played safely in the bosom of her large supernatural family, Edward and Bella finally had their wedding night of unbridled passion. Their love burned long and deep into the night. A brief time of joy and peace…before the dark days ahead.
